The Former President's Woke Warning Misses Europe's True Danger: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a misguided assessment of the European Union. The document asserts that open-border policies and so-called "woke" policies represent an existential threat to European civilization. Yet, this argument is based on a serious misreading of the situation. The true danger facing Europe is not societal but economic and technological backwardness.

The Stark Economic Gap Between Europe and the US

Statistics paint a sobering picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by 87%, compared to a paltry thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. Over this time, EU GDP per capita fell from over three-quarters to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even Mississippi now boasts a higher per capita income than several leading EU nations like Italy and France.

Currently, roughly 50% of the global 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while a mere four are European.

The Technological Deficit: A Critical Problem

The growing disparity is driven by stronger efficiency gains in the United States, fueled by breakthroughs and better use of resources. The scene of global tech leadership is decidedly American. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into companies valued at more than ten billion dollars, versus just 14 in the European continent.

This disparity prompts a pressing question: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, what is Europe stand? Experts widely agree it is essentially a contest between two involving the US and China, with Europe entering at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of key reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a far deeper and more dynamic network for funding startups. Europe still lacks a genuine capital markets union, a factor that caps the growth potential of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided regulation hinder European business. A American entrepreneur can introduce a product under a single set of laws to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a bigger population size, is split among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was once met with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its capacity for pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these challenges, one can find reasons for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have started to propose substantial change. Notable reports on European competitiveness and the internal market highlight the necessity of sweeping reforms.

Given appropriate policies and regulatory reforms, these assets could support much higher levels of commercial innovation.

The continent still possesses significant advantages: skilled workforce, top-tier education systems, and world-class research institutions. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these elements could unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not become the leader in developing cutting-edge tech, it can still dramatically increase economic output by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now stands at a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's technological decline has been steady. But, if it fails to take decisive action to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could turn into a rapid and permanent decline in world influence.
